National Epidemiological Surveillance of Infectious Diseases

What is NESID?

NESID stands for National Epidemiological Surveillance of Infectious Diseases, which is the national Infectious Diseases surveillance system in Japan. Notifications in accordance with the Act on Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Medical Treatment for Patients with Infections Diseases are entered by each public health center branch in NESID. The registered data is evaluated and summarized in the Infectious Disease Surveillance Center of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases and local Infectious Disease Surveillance Centers in all over Japan.

Notifiable Diseases

A notifiable disease is any disease that is required by law to be reported to government authorities. The collation of information allows the authorities to monitor the disease, and provides early warning of possible outbreaks.

Weekly Summary


Sentinel Surveillance

A sentinel surveillance system is used when high-quality data are needed about a particular disease that cannot be obtained through a passive system. Selected reporting units, with a high probability of seeing cases of the disease in question, good laboratory facilities and experienced well-qualified staff, identify and notify on certain diseases.
